Internal Wikis Go Mainstream by 2010

 * New Headline Added Today

Ferris Research, one of the first to cover enterprise wikis (Jeff Ubois wrote about them four years ago), has a new report that internal wikis will go mainstream by 2010.  Essentially, by then the knowledge base use case will be common and wikis will be the natural vehicle.These "wikipedias-inside" will be used throughout the organization to document internal language, like commonly used code words or acronyms. They will also be used by smaller teams, such as: HR or finance, documenting corporate policies/procedures Sales and marketing, tracking competitive intelligence, market research, RFI/RFP responses, or information about key partners/suppliers/vendors Support staff accessing a knowledge base to diagnose and solve cu...

SignOn San Diego Adds Local Wikis

Some people in the user generated content community are very Wiki-centric, but there really haven’t been local applications – until now. Our forward looking friends at The San Diego Union Tribune’s SignOn San Diego site have launched a local Wiki to fill out their AmplifiSD music site. The AmplifiSD Wiki lets registered users contribute and edit local band info and bios and videos and MP3s and other information, such as discussions about the pros and cons of various music venues from the Casbah nightclub to the Verizon Amplitheater (Just for the record, Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder and Jewel are all from San Diego). In conversations with me and Newspapers and Technology, SignOn head Chris Jennewein noted that the AmplifiSD Wiki, which is mos...

IDC Survey: 1/4 of Enterprises Use Wikis

Jeff Brainard posted a the results of an IDC survey along with a Q&A with collaboration analyst Mark Levitt on the Socialtext blog."IDC’s 1Q07 AppStats survey, nearly a quarter of the 258 U.S. respondents reported that wikis are already in use at their organizations."This is the only research to date we have found on the current penetration of wikis into the enterprise.  Gartner predicts that 50% of companies will use wikis by 2009.  Perhaps we are halfway there.

Mahalo featured on Wikipedia's home page... (I can haz wikipediaz pagez pleze?)

Mahalo is being featured on the (english) Wikipedia home page right now in the "Did you know..." section. Our Wikipedia page was created in record time, locked down, edited and promoted. All this happened in one week and I'm really excited that the page turned out more detailed and fair than most of the coverage we received in the marketplace. Of course, it seems that most of the work was done by one person--an SEO.Awwwww.......... group hug!(seems as thought the fact that our lead investor, Sequoia Capital, funded Yahoo and Google was not lost on Wikipedians--smart cats)Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Wikipedia: Encyclopedia or Kama Sutra?

Wikipedia can be a great source of information on a range of topics. The user generated universe is infinite and the people that contribute and seek information within this exchange have created one of the most vibrant information communities I have seen in my lifetime. But, I wonder, “What specifically do people tend to use Wikipedia for?” As you would expect many of the top subjects relate to current events and cultural phenomena. For the month of April some of the top subjects included “Don Imus”, “Virginia Tech massacre”, “global warming”, “Naruto” (a Japanese comic and anime TV series) and “Sanjaya Malakar” of American Idol fame. In addition to these predictable terms, there was a substantial volume of sexual terms. Apparently B...

Wikipedia, the ActoNetwork, and the War to Save Capitalism

I've been working long and hard on the ActoNetwork business plan -- a plan aiming for nothing short of global conquest, so that a new empire, one custom built for the open source/attention economy, will emerge. A section on competitors is considered a standard part of a business plan, and so I've spent a good amount of time asking: who are the competitors of the ActoNetwork? In the broadest of terms, this means anyone who is seeking attention, which pretty much means that competitors include.....everyone. Of course some competitors are more dangerous than others. And perhaps more importantly, some competitors are more evil than others -- and hence it is up to the ActoNetwork, an underdog in the game of capitalism, to rise above, commod...
