iPhone and Web 2.0

The iPhone is a platform in infancy, waiting to be exploited in the next decade. It has already changed the way people think these devices should work, and how developers should provide third-party applications. Even as naysayers pointed to the lack of a decent software developer kit, two new applications appeared from third parties within two days of Steve Jobs' appearance at the Apple Developer Conference.[...]

Apple iPhone Follows Facebook In Creating A Web 2.0 Platform For Third-Party Applications

Never underestimate Steve Jobs. After all of the hand-wringing over Apple’s iPhone being a closed platform, today Apple announced that the iPhone will indeed be open to third-party applications — ingeniously, through integration with Apple’s Safari web browser, which has just been released for Windows (which itself is a huge smack against Microsoft, which has really been taking it on the chin lately, e.g. Google Gears). Apple today announced that its revolutionary iPhone? will run applications created with Web 2.0 Internet standards when it begins shipping on June 29. Developers can create Web 2.0 applications which look and behave just like the applications built into iPhone, and which can seamlessly access iPhone?s servi...

Facing Your Web 2.0 Conference Avatars + Sangria

Yesterday afternoon and evening was 2.0 Sydney ad agency discussions and a great T-Bone steak et frites. There is a definite rumbling about that next fn huge idea, but a collective recognition that there isn't the labour to deliver or obvious clients to trailblaze. But maybe with a bit of sales luvn....

This morning I woke up to a private equity laced breakfast where I learnt that the entry price for a media play downunder, a good one I tell you not a startup, is $1.5B. But make sure you have a good idea about what to do with the asset Mr Mokbel and relatives (something more than negatively gear it.. Don't end up in a greece cafe either with interpol chasing)

Then was the usual william st mad ru...

Upcoming Chicago Internet Web 2.0, Social Media and IPTV Events

I thought you should be aware of these upcoming events. June 19th, Jeff Pulver is having a party at the House of Blues in Chicago on June 19th from 7:00pm-11:00pm. You must RSVP. It’s rumored non-RSVP’d intruders will be escorted out the back door on Lower Wacker Drive and trust me those rats down there are mighty big so don’t even think about it! June 20th, Kirsten Nicole, one of my favorite chat buddies that brightens my days, of Mashable is holding a gathering, buy your tickets by June 6th and get a 2 for 1 deal! The event is described as follows: The web 2.0 technology community is experiencing a lot of growth in Chicago, and we would like to not only recognize this community, but help bridge the gap between Chicago...

How Sequoia Venture Capital Will Pop the Bubble of Web 2.0 - Mahalo or MFAhollow?

Starting the ridiculous round of investment in such a terrible idea. Continue doing this, and the end will definitely be near. This is so bad I will even give them a link (though I’ve decided it should contain the anchor text “squidoo crackbaby”). Seriously - if you guys are GIVING away money to shit like this, I’ve got an awesome bridge in Brooklyn that we can put google ads on. Scraped content commented on by people who are too lazy to get a real job? I’m sure the quality control level should stay very high, and there will be no incentive for payoffs on terms like “mortgage” (because that never happend on dmoz). Why not listen to some folks that know about search, and social media for investm...

Enterprise 2.0 Camp: Ryan Coleman

Ryan Coleman, another friend of mine from the TorCamp community, led a discussion on language translation and the impact on the sort of interacting with the global community due to the premise of wikinomics. Although it's easy (and arrogant) for those of us who are native English speakers to just ignore other languages and pretend that everyone speaks English, the fact is that if you're message isn't well-understood, you'll end up losing business or creating inefficiencies within your organization. At this point, translation services is a $10B business worldwide, and growing. He gave some examples of evaluating the context and content to determine whether it needs to be translated, and the degree of care that needs to be taken, before going...

Privacy and Surveillance in Web 2.0: Unintended Consequences and the Rise of “Netaveillance”

[This thought piece appears on the On The Identity Trail project’s blog, blog*on*nymity. Thanks to the amazing folks there for the (second) invitation to contribute to the project. -mz] This post is an attempt to collect and organize some thoughts on how the rise of so-called Web 2.0 technologies bear on privacy and surveillance studies. After presenting a few examples of unintended consequences of Web 2.0 that bear on privacy and surveillance, I will introduce the term “netaveillance,” which might provide a useful concept around which a more robust theory of surveillance about the Web 2.0 phenomena might be built. The rhetoric surrounding the Web 2.0 movement presents certain cultural claims about media, identity, and technology. It ...

Everyone’s Web 2.0 Revenue Model

The buzz and hype of the new web landscape has subsided considerably. Yet, to my surprise, more and more ‘web 2.0′ start-ups continue to operate with the cheesiest, most over-used strategies. “We’re currently in stealth mode.” “Our AJAX widget will VOIP the RSS while podcasting to bloggers in a wiki-like fashion.” Our target market is anyone who uses the Internet.” These crack me up. Like… give us all a break. My favourite though… is one that is not as apparent, or even stated anywhere. It pertains to the revenue models of these ventures. Contrary to what many may think (especially the companies themselves), a revenue model was never part of the initial strategy. To some, this ma...
