Blog Firsts: The First Ever Events by Blogs

 * New Headline Added Today

In an article on Wired in November of 2002, Kendra Mayfield wrote in “Blog to Court: Check Your Facts” about the “first” time a blog influenced and corrected a court decision. When attorney Howard Bashman noticed a small error in the footnote of a 5th Circuit appellate court opinion, he quickly noted it on his weblog. The next day, Judge Jerry Smith, who wrote the opinion and also happens to be a reader of Bashman’s blog, fixed the error in an amended version. The judge e-mailed Bashman, personally thanking him for bringing the mistake to his attention. “It’s the first time that I’ve noticed a weblog credited for pointing out an error and causing a correction (in a court decision),” Bash...

Temporary Fix to Blogger Publishing Error

 * New Headline Added Today

I posted (manually) yesterday about how many Blogger users, including myself, were <a href="http://blog.seoptimise.com/2007/06/bloggercom-not-publishing-any-posts-or.html">experiencing problems when publishing posts or comments</a>. <br /><br />I'm not sure why this was happening but as a workaround it seems that if you set the date of your latest post to tomorrow's date this fixes the problem. Thanks to <a href="http://groups.google.co.uk/group/blogger-help-publishing/browse_thread/thread/353c0cfddeb33b90">Abandon Skip</a> who posted about the fix on Google Groups.<div class="blogger-post-footer">-------------------------<br /><a href="http://www.seoptimise.com">Search Engine Optimisati...

According to William Houston [scroll down to story ' hockey blogging'], <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20070614.TRUTH14/TPStory/?query=islanders">The New York Islanders have determined</a> that the blogosphere "cannot be ignored," and they've set up a work area for bloggers. This report from a newspaper that now has a /sports/hockey blog online. TechCrunch Slowdown Today

TechCrunch was barely crawling this evening, due to a double slowdown from two third party apps on the site. Stripped both out, and the site is humming. Fastest load time I’ve ever seen.

News Shorts: Hockey Rink Makes ‘BloggerBox’; Read Your GMail from Yahoo

Finally, someone really ‘gets‘ bloggers: Traffick reports that the New York Islanders think “the blogosphere can no longer be ignored,” and have created a work area for bloggers. No, not on their website: at the rink. The Globe and Mail reports (see the last section in the article, ‘Hockey blogging’) that they’ll have a workplace in Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders’ VP of Media Relations, Chris Botta, said, “We believe it is a significant new avenue to grow the popularity not just of the Islanders, but of the game of hockey.” If only all industries were so easily persuaded. (Incidentally, during the hockey season, the Islanders run two blogs on their website.) Loren Baker report...

A Blogging Trick

Here’s a trick that you can see done by many bloggers: write authoritatively, no matter how little you know about a subject. Nobody actually checks your credentials, so it’s quite easy to pretend to be an expert, especially if you adopt the proper tone. Blogging is at a point where credibility is beginning to matter, but it’s still not of paramount importance. You don’t have to get a degree from “Blogging University” to get started. All it takes is Wordpress and some free hosting. Or, if you want to spend nothing, you can do Blogger and get your blog on. Will acting important do the trick in the long run? No. Real experts will eventually figure out what’s going on, but you might be able to g...

Google Improves Blogger: Video Uploading Now Included?

Google (or rather Blogger) is releasing a new feature entitled “Blogger in Draft” which allows users to beta test new features before they go live with the general blog*spot population. The first feature the search engine giant seems to be testing is video uploading, which many bloggers have been requesting ever since Google came out with Google Video (not to mention the billion dollar plus YouTube purchase). (more…)

Get Blogger's Experimental Features

Google’s Blogger has a new homepage for early adopters, as they say: draft.blogger.com*. From here you will be able to get new features still in test mode, like a current video upload option which you can trigger with an icon button above your editor (your video will be hosted at Google Video, not YouTube, by the way). There’s also a new blog for the draft Blogger (which I’ve added to the Google’s blogs page). *To recap, when a Google product or feature is in early status, it’s called: Labs, Experimental, Draft, Test, or Beta. What Makes a Blog Popular?

<p>A June 4th article in <strong>Ad Age</strong> (subscription required) compiles some useful studies of the blogosphere, but, like most mainstream media articles about blogging, it largely misses the point about what really makes blogs influential. That got me thinking about what <em>really</em> makes a blog popular.</p> <p>The article notes: <blockquote>"[Blogs] have the power to send stock prices plummeting and influence the buying decisions of millions. Consumers count them as more credible than your advertising and e-mail marketing."</blockquote> And that's absolutely true. But it's not the 15 million active bloggers who have that kind of influence, it's the top 5,000. ...

Backup Your Blog Today

If you didn’t know, today is Blog Backup Day. The 13th of every month is the one day that you should take a few minutes and backup your blog posts in case something bad happens. What if the database server decides to crash tomorrow? Then what?! I started Blog Backup Day in hopes to encourage other blog authors to save their data. You never know when a hosting error or hacker will pop up. There is nothing worse for a blogger than realizing that your past year (or more) worth of blog posts are simply gone. So, take a few minutes and backup your blog!

Katherine McIntyre Blogging

I love outing friends that are blogging.  My partner Ryan McIntyre’s wife Katherine has started a blog titled It is what it is.  Katherine and Ryan moved to Boulder in August 2006 and – other than the worst winter ever in the history of man – have been settling in nicely.  Katherine is a beautiful writer: upfront, personal, and articulate while being willing to tackle juicy stuff.  Her posts have quickly become some of my favorites to read when they show up in FeedDemon.  Katherine - welcome to the blogosphere or whatever it is called these days.

Google/FeedBurner To Tackle Scraping?

When FeedBurner announced that it was being bought out by Google last month, several things were immediately clear.  First, it became clear that the owners of FeedBurner were going to receive a $100 million payday. Second, it was clear that Google would receive access to a berth of statistics about RSS feeds not previously available to them. Finally, it was clear that Google was making yet another foray into the advertising market, buying up the the budding FeedBurner Advertising Network.  However, many questions have gone unanswered. Though FeedBurner attempted to head off some of the questions with their FAQ on the subject, many of the more difficult questions remain. Will Google integrate FeedBurner into its analytics program? Will the F...

Technorati Expands Search and Tracking

Technorati has expanded its mission to become the authority on tagging of all types of content. The former blog search tool now indexes videos and music along with blogs and news, allowing a personalized window into what's hot. The new utility provides more data about the hottest tags and detail about the buzz about websites, news, and tags, and the company offers several widget tools for tracking links to websites that compliments the raw traffic data that you can get from Google Analytics. You can see who's linking, where you rank and what are the most popular tags associated with your blog. Technorati's tags are becoming so popular with users that they are gaining in rank with Google's natural results, according to Google Blogoscope....

NCAA Forbids Blogging During Baseball

The Associated Press is reporting that a journalist from the The Courier-Journal was booted out of the press box at an NCAA baseball game for blogging about the game. The NCAA policy is that there is to be no blogging about NCAA baseball games during the game. NCAA spokesman Bob Williams said Monday that Bennett was asked not to blog about game action before Sunday's game. "In a nutshell, we asked the blogger repeatedly not to cover it in that manner, because it violates the policy, and he continued, and his credential was revoked," Williams said. Williams said it didn't matter that the newspaper had blogged at other NCAA events, like the Orange Bowl and NCAA basketball tournament. "Essentially, we enforce the policy when we learn of vi...

Ext 1.1 Beta + Feed Reader 3 Demo

Jack Slocum saw our post on the Joomla widget, and pointed us to a his FeedViewer 3 application, slated to be released with Ext 2.0: The FeedViewer example app has been rewritten from scratch for Ext 2.0. It is intended to be a good reference implementation of 2.0 and unlike the other examples which were written with speed of development in mind, FeedViewer 3 features it's code broken up into logical classes. This makes the code much more organized and easier to maintain. Some new things in FeedViewer 3 are reading pane placement, post summaries, context menus (tabs, grid and tree context menus), combobox (in "Add feed" window) and some significant performance improvements. It starting to look pretty decent, so I have thrown a dev copy u...

Blogging is Easy Money, Right?

Wrong. But you didn’t need me to tell you that. Those who are making a living directly from blogging (as opposed to using a blog to promote an existing business) know that it took a lot of hard work to get there. Those that think the secret is cranking out generic “content” that does little more than fill up space are quitting in droves or desperately searching for the answer that will get them over the hump. When I first collaborated with Yaro Starak over a year ago, he struck me as someone who would make it. But at the time, Yaro was only making about $1,000 a month from his online marketing efforts after a year of hard work. He seemed resolved to take things to the next level, but I could tell he was a bit frustrated. What a difference a...

How To Get More Links to Your Remarkable Blog Posts

Brian Clark posted about how to get more subscribers through remarkable writing and vangogh follow up with an extended purple cow analogy: CopyBlogger (as one example) gets talked about and linked to often and rightfully so. Brian’s content is generally remarkable. However if you took a few of Brian’s more talked about posts and moved them to a relatively unknown blog they wouldn’t get talked about as much or even at all. In a sense it’s the purple cow in the barn syndrome. CopyBlogger is out of the barn and standing in the middle of the field. Once there are enough purple cows in your field then people will look longer at your ordinary black and white cow and some will even believe they see purple. It’s all the purple from the other cows i...

Google & FeedBurner

I haven’t had a chance to think long and hard yet about Google’s recent decision to acquire FeedBurner, and I’m sure most reactions will center on how this provides Google yet another medium to deliver contextual ads. But my first reaction was slightly different: What FeedBurner seems to provide Google — as much as an advertising medium — is an automatic feed of new Web content and an instant mapping of the all important links between pages. Now, instead of Google needing to rely on the efficiency of its crawlers to find these new blog posts, they will be delivered right to Google’s front door every time we ping http://ping.feedburner.com. It’s Official: Google Has Acquired Feedburner And It’s All About Metrics And Advertising ROI

FeedBurner just quietly posted to their site the official announcement that Google has indeed acquired Feedburner. Here’s what CEO Dick Costolo has to say about why it’s such a great fit (which it really is): 1. Google’s competencies and focus around publisher analytics, distribution, and monetization map perfectly to our suite of services. 2. Publishers want a single dashboard and single source for the metrics that give them feedback about the value of their content and its impact on their business. By combining our market leading feed metrics with Google’s market leading site and marketing analytics, publishers now get a comprehensive, 360-degree view of their audience. This ‘total perspective’ has lon...

The Issue of Professionalism in Blogging

When I sent the rough draft of ActoBlog.com over to a colleague of mine, his immediate reaction was one of dissatisfaction with the design, citing it as "unprofessional." This got me thinking: what does professional really mean, especially on the Internet? I prefer to think about it in terms of the target customer: will professional bloggers, the target users for ActoBlogs, find the site to be "unprofessional"? Professional bloggers can span a wide range of individuals, from Steve Pavlina to Michael Arrington, and loads more people with smaller audiences. In this context, I did not find the ActoBlog design to be unprofessional. Perhaps my colleague was just being tactful, and what he really means is that it "loo...

Well, some of you love the Technorati search ticker on the home page and some of you, well, don't like it so much. We've listened to your feedback and have added a close button on the right hand side of the ticker. Thanks for the feedback - we aim to please. Why we stopped podcasting

<p>Eager to explore the emerging new medium of podcasting, we launched our own <a href="http://customerevangelists.typepad.com/podcast/">podcast </a>in February 2005. Our goal was to produce thoughtful and interesting shows about customer evangelism and word of mouth. </p> <p>It was fun for about 10 episodes but exhausted by the work, we stopped. For the NPR-sounding quality we sought, the production was time-consuming and laborious. We usually spent 8-10 hours editing a 30-40 minute show.</p> <p>We were in "the dip," as Seth Godin describes in his terrific new book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dip-Little-Book-Teaches-Stick/dp/1591841666">"The Dip: </a><sp...

Do Your Blogs Break the Law?

(Note: an alternative way of phrasing the question above would be, “How many laws is your blog breaking?”). I came across a post today that begged discussion. The topic was “blogger law” and the post served up some useful and interesting facts of what a blogger (can and cannot) do legally. While the post had some great info of which I was unaware, there were some serious problems that just reminded me of how much I hate politicians. Regarding the requirement of bloggers to disclose paid sponsorships (a la PPP & ReviewMe): CONSIDER that even though the FTC’s paid review disclosure recommendation doesn’t appear to apply to links, meaning that webmasters aren’t required to “NoFollow” the paid links they give as of...
