Snow business like SEO business... Been working with my buddy Thomas Bindl over the past few weeks. We're working together on a large European project. We spent most of last week in Amsterdam and then moved on to Helsinki, Finland. We've not had much snow in the UK this year. So it was nice to see the crisp white covering over the Finnish countryside. And no shortage of it downtown, either.

SEO 2.0 - Digital Asset Optimization

At the past two conferences I’ve spoken at, Search Insider Summit and Media Relations Summit, one of the popular topics that has been floating around the after session meet-ups and dinner conversations concerns the changing nature of search optimization. Some speculate SEO is on the way out. Others say social media is the new SEO. Whatever the speculation, companies need to figure out how to best adjust their search marketing strategies to maintain a competitive advantage. One way to do that is to focus the right proportion of effort on standard text optimization as well as the optimization and promotion of all other digital assets. Both Google’s Universal Search and the new Ask3D interface that show users more information from ...

Google’s User Distributed Search Results in Emails, IMs, Blogger

Imagine writing an email or blog post or forum post or IM message, and having a button that you can press that will perform queries based upon what you’ve written and find relevant lists of search results based upon your content, for you to include with what you have written. Those can be maps and local search result lists for addresses or businesses that you’ve included, or search results for a name or product in your message or post, or other information. A couple of illustrations below (click on the images to see larger versions) show how these might look in email, or might be offered to someone writing a post in Blogger. Local search results inserted into an email: Auto generated search results offered to a blogger creati...

In-House SEO in Large Organizations

While many large organizations might be inclined to outsource their SEO, AOL's Melanie Mitchell says that could be a mistake. In today's SearchDay, Laying the Foundation for In-House SEO Success in Large Organizations, Mitchell sets out to debunk the arguments against having an in-house search engine optimization (SEO) team, especially in a large organization. She talks about elements of a core SEO team, and ways to establish in-house SEO as a cross-functional effort. She also discusses setting targets for both the core team and individual business units engaged in elements of SEO.

First NYC SEO Meetup at HiTTail.com

I met with Mike Levin of HitTail.com (Mike Levin is HitTail, as far as I'm concerned) last night in Chelsea, not far from my own work location.  I video blogged the event and had a great time.   Actually, the correct name for this meeting is the NYC Search Engine Super Powers meetup. It was raining so there were not that many people but the quality of what we spoke about was excellent - and it was all about the secret sauce of SEO.  You can get a sense of the meeting by viewing my embedded YouTube Video - below: The first meeting was more of an introduction and clarification of SEO vs. SEM and what HitTail does - but it went beyond that - to what you have to do to make any site perform as well as blogs do fo...

A Strange Coincidence… SEO is Like Middle School!

During my first month at OneUpWeb, I've learned a lot about search engine optimization and I've noticed some striking similarities between SEO and adolescent social behavior: The first déjà vu I experienced was when I learned about the power of search engines. Based on a constellation of factors, search engines get to decide which web pages are worthy of the first page of results and which aren’t. One tool to measure status is Google's Page Rank. Those that continually make the cut over time are given a stamp of approval in the form of a high Page Rank score. In...

Codifying SEO Knowledge

SEO knowledge is something that can be measured, but often isn’t. Or when it is measured, it’s done imprecisely, or with a lot of biases built in. So far I haven’t seen too many attempts to classify SEO knowledge, until this post: Ranking SEO Knowledge by Michael Martinez. Make sure to check out his excellent SEO Theory Blog, which is, frankly, one of the very few SEO blogs I read. (more…)

SEO Scoop has a new look

Obviously, unless you are brand spankin’ new here, you’ve noticed that SEO Scoop is now sporting a whole new look. It’s certainly possible that I’ve missed something here or there, so if a problem crops up, let me know. I may still tweak things a bit over the next few days, but basically, this is the new Scoop. SEO - Search Engine Optimization Tricks

Consider this a gift if you are seeking to lead the search engine rankings with some newer tips and tricks. I used to do this for a living and have tried to stay current over the new technologies as they come out. SEO is generally much easier now that there are fewer search engines to target. Back in the good 'ole days we had to target multiple engines and change the code behind to be specific for each one.<br /><br />I have a long history of working on search engine projects and feel nothing reveals tricks like building a search engine to see how it works. One project was the <a href="http://qmir.dcs.qmw.ac.uk/INEX/Participants.html">Initiative to evaluate XML Retrieval</a> (which I was largely working with Univ...

Yahoo! Search Crawler, Slurp, has a new Address and Signature Card

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, we've been migrating our crawler, Yahoo! Slurp, over to the new domain at crawl.yahoo.net. As of today, the transition is complete and all machines crawling as Slurp are now in crawl.yahoo.net. You can see this change in your web server logs, where the page accesses from inktomisearch.com are being fully replaced by crawl.yahoo.net contacts. Note that this does not cover other Yahoo! crawlers, such Yahoo! China, and other verticals, like Yahoo! Shopping, Yahoo! Travel, etc., which have their own user-agent. Don't fret though; there is no need to change your robots.txt file because the crawler user-agent is still Yahoo! Slurp. If you use IP based filtering, there is no need to change that either, since the I...

Google is not an Algorithm: Google Imparts Intent

Back in November the big news from Pubcon was that Google imparts intent when evaluating a web site for “quality”. John Chow Creates SEO Experts

Update: Turns out I was right! Skip to the end if you want to know the secret. You’ll have to pardon me if this post sounds a bit like a rant because… well… it pretty much is. However, I think it’s both necessary and addresses an issue many of us have dealt with at some point. Rather than jumping right in, I probably should provide at list a bit of background info so I don’t leave you wondering what the hell just happened here. For those of you who don’t know who John Chow is, he’s a self proclaimed “dot com mogul” who has earned millions online. The NYTimes article that SEOs will be dissecting for the next year

This article just showed up on the front page of Digg. It is from the New York Times and has a rarely seen inside look at Google’s search ranking unit also known as “search quality.” I have long abandoned reading the endless forum discussions and blogs about search engine optimization. (Besides simply not having the time, focusing on advertising and promotion has proven to be far more profitable.) Sick of Matt Cutts? This article refers to some of the real Google puppetmasters including Amit Singhal and Udi Manber. If you want to know who they are, read the article. “Mr. Singhal has developed a far more elaborate system for ranking pages, which involves more than 200 types of information, or what Google calls “signal...

Local SEO - Comparision of Abingdon Hotel Websites

I've been doing a few local searches recently to find some examples of well-optimised Abingdon websites, I found a Google search for "Abingdon hotels" brought up an excellent example of both good and bad SEO for various local accommodation websites. Just to make it clear I have nothing to do with any of these websites and I'm unsure if they have received any SEO advice, I just find <a href="http://blog.seoptimise.com/2007/03/how-to-get-adwords-local-clicks-for.html">local search engine optimisation</a> quite interesting so chose these sites to take a deeper look into how they're ranking.<br /><br />Here's a quick look at how some of the basic SEO factors compare for the top four hotels in Abingdon:<br /><br ...

SEO: When Is Duplicate Content Okay? When Is It Penalized?

The concept of being penalized by the search engines for duplicate content can be confusing. Ross Dunn discusses five kinds of duplicate content and gives guidelines to bring each within safe parameters: (1) website mirroring, (2) article syndication, (3) multiple available versions of content, (4) repetition in e-commerce product pages, and (5) quoting others. Date: May 24, 2007, 09:06
