News Shorts: Hockey Rink Makes ‘BloggerBox’; Read Your GMail from Yahoo

Finally, someone really ‘gets‘ bloggers: Traffick reports that the New York Islanders think “the blogosphere can no longer be ignored,” and have created a work area for bloggers. No, not on their website: at the rink. The Globe and Mail reports (see the last section in the article, ‘Hockey blogging’) that they’ll have a workplace in Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders’ VP of Media Relations, Chris Botta, said, “We believe it is a significant new avenue to grow the popularity not just of the Islanders, but of the game of hockey.” If only all industries were so easily persuaded. (Incidentally, during the hockey season, the Islanders run two blogs on their website.) Loren Baker report...

Start Migrating Your Yahoo Photos

Back in the beginning of May, Yahoo announced that they would be closing down Yahoo Photos, a process that would occur over several months. Those who have photos stored on Yahoo have been given a few different options as a replacement service, and yesterday marked the day that Yahoo made the tools available so that users can begin the process. Flickr is the first choice that they are giving users, seeing as they are owned by Yahoo. Afterall, they’re closing Yahoo Photos so that they can focus all of their attention and efforts on Flickr. Flickr isn’t for everybody though, so they have given a list of other alternatives. All you have to do is log into your account to see the options available. According...

Yahoo! Hack Day Here in London

This coming Saturday (16th June) will be Yahoo! Hack Day here in London, and a few members of my buddy's company (the Nestoria team) will be on hand. But rather than just attending, they though it might be a bit of fun if they tried to subvert the event and turn it into their own hack contest. As such, they are delighted to present 'The quasi-official Nestoria Hack contest' to be held at Yahoo! Hack Day.

Reprise Media releases Yahoo Panama report

After months of avid data collection and analysis, we've finally released our comprehensive review of Panama. Yesterday, Reprise Media published, "Inside Yahoo Panama," an in-depth look at Yahoo's "new" advertising platform and its impact on marketers. The study analyzes various areas of Panama, including its handling of campaign management, user interface, systems integration and performance. Here are some of the key findings of our report: Panama Establishes Industry Standards: Many of the changes between systems move Yahoo's structure and tools much closer to existing platforms at Google and MSN. Whether intentionally or not, Yahoo has created some defacto industry standards, such as the organization of ...

The Fantastic Four: Google, Yahoo, MSN & Ask

Last Friday night, while at the movies, I happened to see a preview for the new Fantastic Four movie - Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. While marveling (no pun intended) at the special effects on the theater's recently installed digital movie screen, I, being the Internet geek that I am, thought about the Fantastic Four in terms of search engine optimization and the four major search engines: Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask. Since I enjoy finding similarities in things that one wouldn't necessarily expect, I figured that it might be fun to figure out which search engine would...

Industry Watch: Web based gaming Yahoo Games, Kongregate, Pogo, and Miniclip

Have you been keeping track of the online web-based gaming industry? Web-based gaming means there are no downloads, often the games are flash based, and can be a real time sink, any tower defense, bubble, or that addictive quadradius game. In particular, there are few platforms that are springing up that lets users create games, upload them and share with others. I saw a demo of Kongregate, I wrote up my review at while at Microsoft at Silicon Valley Launch. Yahoo Games This is the baseline of how we know web based gaming platforms, many of these games are yahoo created of by third parties. I remember playing chess on this when it first started to take wind. Kongregate If I had to invest my money in one company it would be this one. They...

Yahoo Rolls out Quality Based Pricing

Yahoo recently rolled out Quality Based Pricing. Essentially, this says that not all clicks from the content network are created equal, and therefore, they advertisers should pay a different price based upon the quality of that click. What’s interesting is Yahoo is saying they are using conversion data as one of the data points (there are others) in determining this pricing. For those familiar with AdWords, it’s very similar to the AdWords Discounter. Maybe Yahoo Needs an Injection of “New”

I missed this post last week on the Internet Marketing Monitor. It says: “Maybe an infusion of new thinking, new experiences, and fresh perspectives would be good for Yahoo.” Then later: “Maybe employees who weren’t yet ingrained with Yahoo’s past ways of doing things would be able to breathe new, renewed life into the one-time Internet king. “ Time will tell if they wisely chose this path.

Yahoo to Release Quality-Based Content Click Pricing

Today Yahoo! announced quality-based pricing for clicks coming from distribution partners in the sponsored search and content match programs. Similar in intent and implementation to Google's "Smart Pricing," it will automatically discount a publisher's click revenue (and the amount the advertiser pays for that click) by "a certain percentage" based on traffic quality as measured by conversion rates and other factors.

This systematizes the same process that has taken place with interactive ads for years: advertisers run tests, find out which sites convert well, and reprice their offers when they re-order, lowballing th...

Search Is No Longer The Dominant Paradigm, says Yahoo!

Well, kinda. Yahoo Search Marketing Launches Quality Based Pricing

Earlier today Yahoo Search Marketing announced they will now provide free, open access to the “Panama” search marketing application program interfaces (APIs) through the launch of the Commercial API Program. Commercial clients (big agencies) will also be offered optional fee-based, value-added services that come in three flavors: basic, advanced and elite. Yahoo’s been busy today, because this evening I got the heads up Y!SM is rolling out quality based pricing across it’s paid search and contextual advertising networks. Here’s the lowdown on quality based pricing from Yahoo: “Essentially, it assesses the quality of a publisher’s traffic based upon the publisher’s ability to deliver more interested, high-value potent...

Yahoo Turns to Openness

Rumor: M$FT to buy Yahoo! [3]

This (if it's true) makes alot of sense. All of Redmond's previous efforts at search have been near- or total failures... I shudder to think about what the culture clash might feel like for those people whose business units collide if this acquisition actually goes thru. Off the cuff, I think one big huge winner coming out of such a monster mashup would be Silverlight... I'll explain this hunch in more detail if anybody cares to comment with a request for such prattlings.

Yahoo Auctions End With a Whimper

Yahoo will close its online auction service for North America next month, signaling the Internet powerhouse's intention to focus on more profitable endeavors as it tries to snap out of a financial malaise. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company's auctions in the United States and Canada will end June 16, although some tools will remain accessible until Oct. 29. The closure won't affect Yahoo's auction services in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. Yahoo is retreating from North America's auction market nearly nine years after launching the service.

The retrenchment coincides with Yahoo's plans to phase out its original photo service this summer in favor of a more recent offering, called Flickr, that provides more sophis...
