Trillian Basic and MSN Messenger

I’ve been getting emails from buddies who use MSN Messenger telling me that they never see me online any more. This is strange since I am online everyday and I could see some of them using Trillian Basic. So, what gives? Why could I see them and they could not see me? Turns out you need to [...]

Microsoft releases AIDS research tools

Microsoft Research has released source code for software tools to advance AIDS vaccine research, with the company's spam filter playing a role in the effort. Available for free download on Microsoft's CodePlex site, Microsoft is hoping to entice other scientists to use and build upon the tools to expedite development of a vaccine. The tools are intended to help researchers harness computing power to more quickly identify crucial elements of an effective cellular vaccine, Microsoft said. Microsoft researchers began work in AIDS research in February 2005 after discovering that machine-learning technology, including methods for spam-filtering, had applications for vaccine research. The vaccine work combines technologies including graphical...

The Fantastic Four: Google, Yahoo, MSN & Ask

Last Friday night, while at the movies, I happened to see a preview for the new Fantastic Four movie - Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. While marveling (no pun intended) at the special effects on the theater's recently installed digital movie screen, I, being the Internet geek that I am, thought about the Fantastic Four in terms of search engine optimization and the four major search engines: Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask. Since I enjoy finding similarities in things that one wouldn't necessarily expect, I figured that it might be fun to figure out which search engine would...

MSN Search by Any Other Name Might Not Be As Sweet

I read an interesting article today by, of all people, a venture partner discussing Microsoft’s evolving brand strategy. The article, by James Joaquin, juxtaposes the renaming of MSN Search to “Microsoft Windows Live Search” versus the simple brand structure of Google Search. Joaquin points out that as Microsoft has grown, it has faced the problem many growing companies face — growing the brand and creating a brand naming structure that supports the parent brand (Microsoft) while allow new products to have their own sub-brands (Windows). By renaming MSN search to “Microsoft Windows Live Search”, Microsoft has created a brand that is three sub-brands deep (Windows, Live, Search), as illustrated in his Micr...

Justice Dep't Rejects Google's Complaint Against Microsoft

Nearly a decade after the government began its landmark effort to break up Microsoft, the Bush administration has sharply changed course by repeatedly defending the company both in the United States and abroad against accusations of anticompetitive conduct, including the recent rejection of a complaint by Google. The retrenchment reflects a substantially different view of antitrust policy, as well as a recognition of major changes in the marketplace.<br /><li>Read the article: <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/10/business/10microsoft.html" target="_blank">The New York Times</a>

Google calls Microsoft on antitrust

The antitrust complaint from Google with regards to Desktop Search on Windows Vista is “heating up” as Barry Schwartz puts it. According to Google, Microsoft has an unfair advantage over the competition when it comes to their Google Desktop product. Google complained to federal and state prosecutors that consumers who try to use its search [...]

Microsoft and Yahoo Plot to Beat Google

I am toooo tired to process a reader question tonight, so I'll leave you with the latest eye-opener circulated by the rumor mill: Rumors Fly on Microsoft and Yahoo. A choice quote: "Microsoft officials said Friday that they would not comment on speculation about an acquisition of Yahoo. But a person briefed on the companies’ discussions said one option that had been considered was the linking of

MSN Out of Beta

The new adCenter is out of Beta - but still not out of the dark ages yet! Even with new and improved ad management abilities we are still not seeing some of the functionality we would expect.  Out of the other traffic centers the adwords system has incorporated the most improvements and taken on board most of our suggestions, MSN and the new Panama platform are following suit & using adwords as their benchmark, in MSN's case migrating from orders to campaigns. With the effort and time taken to create these new platforms nothing radical or improved has come to light yet which is a bit disappointing.  - One function that we do like from MSN is the ability to run one report for multiple clients in one go which is useful. Rest ass...
