Google Ahead in Online Video -- For Now

 * New Headline Added Today

YouTube continues to be the king of online, according to a new report from comScore. The study of video watching habits in March says Google's video properties generated nearly 17 percent of the 7 billion videos watched online. Beyond Google the market gets quickly fractured as only four of the biggest video sites garnered more than 5 percent of market share. This proves video is still wide open and that newcomers (hello Joost!) have ample opportunity to become market leaders. Remember also that just as Google isn't a content owner in the search business, their videos are all owned by other people, so if YouTube irritates the upload crowd, the market could shift swiftly. While searching the internet is always free, Google's ability to str...

Google Starts Catfight with eBay… Grow Up!

 * New Headline Added Today

Google and eBay have been decently friendly to each other over the years despite their competing services. Recently eBay pulled their ads from Google’s AdWords program in the U.S. saying that it was part of an experiment “to look at how we market across all media channels.” However, there’s more to the story than just an experiment. The likely reason that eBay made this decision is in response to a “Protest Party” that Google scheduled in Boston to promote their Google Checkout program during the same time that the eBay Live Conference was to start. If you’re not aware by now, Google Checkout and PayPal are competitors, and in other words, Google decided to start a catfight ...

Future of Media Video: Google Takes Over the World by 2050  —  Davide Casaleggio sent a tip to Read/WriteWeb about a video his company produced exploring the future of media.  It is a very cool 6-minute video, which takes some educated (and imaginative) guesses at how the Web and media will evolve over the next 40-50 years. Google Reduces Search History Storage to 18 Months - down from 24 months

 * New Headline Added Today

Honestly, the news of Google reducing the amount of Search and Web History they're keeping on everyone that has a Google account going down by 25% (6 months) should be good news - but I'm more or less indifferent to it - because the fundamental issue of why they're collecting this data has not been dealt with."......Tuesday, Google announced that it would reduce the records of search histories from 24 months to 18 months.  Google has been pressured by many privacy activists for a reduction. The information which Google shares on search trends, yet keeps personal information private, will be made anonymous after a year and a half.“We looked at what other companies in the industry do, and we were not able to find e...

How Google Rejects Annoying Advertisements and Pages

 * New Headline Added Today

How might a search engine approve or reject ads automatically, without human review, on the basis that the ads are annoying or displeasing in some way? Without considering the very large volume of ads that get presented to Google everyday, you might think that they would manually review every ad that advertisers present for publication, which would take a lot of people. While ads should attract some attention, they shouldn’t be annoying or offensive. There are a number of standards set from Google for image ads, video ads, and for text ads. A patent application from Google goes into a good amount of depth on how it might take a programmatic approach to identifying ads, and Web pages that are “annoying.” The patent filin...

eBay Pulls Google Ads Over Marketing Stunt

 * New Headline Added Today

odoketa writes "According to the BBC, it seems Google scheduled a party to promote their payment system (Google Checkout) on the same day as a big eBay meeting, and this made eBay mad enough to pull their ads with Google. According to the story, eBay says it's merely an 'ongoing experiment' on their marketing. 'Google hoped to alert PayPal users who would have been in Boston attending the eBay Live annual seller event to its own service, according to market experts. It could also have been seen as part of an effort to get eBay to accept Google Checkout, currently banned on the online auctioneer's site. But in a contrite manner, Google cancelled its rival function a day before it was due to happen.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

eBay Yanks Ad Millions After Google's Party Foul

Auction giant eBay has stopped buying Google AdWords in apparent retaliation for a now-canceled event meant to build support among eBay sellers for Google Checkout -- a sign of the increasing tensions between the Internet competitors. The spat reportedly began when Google last week announced it would hold an event that coincided with the beginning of eBay Live, the annual gathering of eBay sellers and devotees taking place in Boston this year.

Google-eBay Spat Shows Need for Competition

Auction site eBay has pulled out of Google AdWords as the frienemies are close to no longer being on speaking terms. The refusal of one multi-service organization to do business with another proves the upside of mega companies such as Google, Microsoft, etc. If Google offers everything from ads to search to video, then their competitors will have little choice but to team up with other companies (or buy their own), such as eBay needing a viable search marketing partner. Strong competition is healthy for the industry, and only by competitors growing in size can they keep each other in check. Independent companies can continue to work with the "best of breed" parts of these organizations.

Google Video Now a Video Search Engine

Google Video went through many reincarnations in the past. It allegedly started out as one of those 20% side projects within Google, and Larry Page admitted, “We’re not quite sure what we’re going to get, but we decided we’d try this experiment.” In its first version, you weren’t even able to watch videos at the site (you’d only see stills & captions from TV shows). This lack of direction in the past felt weird, because a video search engine makes most sense in terms of what people go to Google for, and in terms of what Google is good at. Well, as the Google Operating System blog reports, it looks like Google realized their strengths and finally turned Google Video into an actual web-wide vi...

Google's data limiting initiative gets EU praise

BRUSSELS - European Union Justice and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini has praised Google's move to limit private data storage to 18 months. The EU has previously expressed concern over the way Google stored data that would identify web users. Google's new move is an effort to mollify EU concerns and appears to have appeased the Union at the moment.

eBay Vs. Google: So Much for Coopetition

Google Cancels Checkout Party

Bloomberg broke reported the news @ 3:05pm that Google Checkout canceled its party protesting the ban of Checkout on eBay. And so ends the first skirmish (Google Checkout announces party -> eBay pulls listings from Google AdWords) in the bigger battle. Here’s the statement from the Google Checkout blog: eBay Live attendees have plenty of activities to keep them busy this week in Boston, and we did not want to detract from that activity. After speaking with officials at eBay, we at Google agreed that it was better for us not to feature this event during the eBay Live conference. Google is constantly reaching out to new users and sellers, and we are available to privately discuss any matters of concern with individuals as they relat...

It's a Miracle! Google Fails!

I got into the beta test of Google Mashup Editor, which I'm assuming is the the Google equivalent of Yahoo Pipes. Much to my surprise, I did not find it to be a very good tool; too hard to use, too much thinking required. I've come to expect excellence, especially in the realm of usability, from Google, so I found this quite surprising. But, in all fairness, my criticism is a bit premature; after all, I was initially a bit of a downer on Google Reader, but as they kept working on it and listening to and implementing user feedback, it won over a lot of people -- myself included. Anyway, a simple and easy to use mashup maker is something that I think will really push us along the move towards the mashup web and the reconstruction economy,...

Google/FeedBurner To Tackle Scraping?

When FeedBurner announced that it was being bought out by Google last month, several things were immediately clear.  First, it became clear that the owners of FeedBurner were going to receive a $100 million payday. Second, it was clear that Google would receive access to a berth of statistics about RSS feeds not previously available to them. Finally, it was clear that Google was making yet another foray into the advertising market, buying up the the budding FeedBurner Advertising Network.  However, many questions have gone unanswered. Though FeedBurner attempted to head off some of the questions with their FAQ on the subject, many of the more difficult questions remain. Will Google integrate FeedBurner into its analytics program? Will the F...

While Apple is also a highly desireable place of employment among undergrads, Google dominates the field There's a common thread among career aspirations for undergrads studying IT, business, science, liberal arts, and government: a desire to work at Google. In fact, Google ranks as the No. 1 most desireable place to work among all undergrads nationwide, according to the 2007 Universum IDEAL Employer Survey. No. 2 on the list is Walt Disney, followed by Apple, which also was deemed the most innovative company by the 44,000-plus students who participated. Proof Google is Using Behavioral Data in Rankings

Posted by WebGeekThe other day I read a blog post that blew me away. Entitled "Google Bounce Factor Research Data Is In" and written by Visio, it was about the first real experiment that proves Google is using behavioral data in search engine rankings. Now, I've seen a few scattered posts where SEOs mentioned vague thoughts that Google might be tracking user behavior through either the Google Toolbar or Google analytics, but nothing concrete - nothing like this. I've even thought to myself on a few occasions, why would Google give away a tool as powerful as Google Analytics for free? And the answer screamed at me...For data-mining! But still, no proof or concrete evidence. Let me give you a little background. A few days earlier, V...

Murdoch: Pour Money Into Digital, Make Wall Street Journal Free, Don’t Let Google Own The World

The Wall Street Journal has a fascinating interview with Rupert Murdoch. Here are some choice quotes: I think it’s in the digital area, digital and TV. And I think we’ve got to pour some money into digital. We’ve got to do a lot of things there… There’s so much going on on the Internet. We’ve got to find new ways and new business models to get revenues. Or else the world is going to be owned by Google. Pour money into digital, find new business models, or be owned by Google. Pretty straightforward. I mean there are so many new pipes in how you deliver these things. And so on. We’ll just have to use them all and see what’s economical. I had a study done, and I think you’ve had many more studie...

Vodafone To Add Google In More European Portals

Last year, Vodafone signed a deal with Google to insert its services into the carriers portals. The nature of the deal wasn’t very clear until recently. Some EU portals will progressively add a Google search box right on the top of their homepage. The first one is Vodafone Netherlands, which launched Google search within their Vodafone live! portal on May 21. The search engine allows users to search within Google’s traditional web index (and see transcoded web pages) but also within their mobile search index. Of course, Google will insert sponsored ads within the results, and I heard that this is how Vodafone will make money. Some reliable sources told me that Google will soon be added in more Vodafone portals, such as the UK, ...

Getting outranked by Google Trends Pages

Is it possible that Google Trends pages will outrank yours in the future? Is it possible that “trends” pages will be showing up in organic search for everything that is hot? Will Google’s response be that trends pages include everyone because they link out to blogs, news and other resources on the web? In the previous post I linked a trend page for an outdoor grill and now appear for that phrase (in Trends) BUT guess who is now #1 in organic search? Google! (check it out) It goes something like this: Google shows a trend, you blog about it, you may appear on the actual trend page but the Google trend page outranks you in organic search, how does this make you feel? Put your thinking cap on and view the possible future, it ...

Google Universe - opportunity not enemy

You'd have had to have your head truly stuck in the sand not to notice the news about Google Universal Search, the new multiple content search engine results page from Google, where news, video and just about anything get factored and ranked within a single results page. Bye bye Onebox, hello video in position 2.This really shouldn't have been a surprise to our industry, the above the fold organic results have been getting more and more squeezed by the Onebox, and only via bringing in more specialised results can Google improve the user experience, or generate a perceived improvement. On another note they could also sort out their handling of NRS TLD's to actually get more highly relevant content into the right results filters but Matt alre...
