New ‘Vertical,’ Free-DA Service Launches

Another ad-supported, free directory assistance service launched today, 1-800-In-A-City, that offers travel-related and local search services in categories such as hotel reservations and visitor information, transportation, event tickets, movies, airlines, flowers, pizza delivery and others. This is a “vertical” DA service. I made several quick calls to the service and had a very mixed experience. It appears to hand off calls directly to advertisers – there appear to only be advertisers — and thus is positioned differently than other competing services, which offer general business lookups and build ads around them. Both approaches are PPCall. It’s fully automated, which keeps costs manageable and because it’s ...

Cable TV and Local Search

As Cable television providers test the waters of on-demand programming in the early days of the medium, some have begun to test user preferences in local markets for viewing hyper-local content in an on-demand fashion. Comcast in particular has begun to serve coverage of local events on its on-demand programming menu. This includes things such as high school sports, local parades, and local interest news stories. This is an interesting move for Comcast, in that it brings local video content into more of pull based delivery mechanism, akin to the development that video is seeing online. The next step could be to integrate small business video advertising to on-demand menus, which would make them more directional and pull based than they ha...

Local SEO - Comparision of Abingdon Hotel Websites

I've been doing a few local searches recently to find some examples of well-optimised Abingdon websites, I found a Google search for "Abingdon hotels" brought up an excellent example of both good and bad SEO for various local accommodation websites. Just to make it clear I have nothing to do with any of these websites and I'm unsure if they have received any SEO advice, I just find local search engine optimisation quite interesting so chose these sites to take a deeper look into how they're ranking.

Here's a quick look at how some of the basic SEO factors compare for the top four hotels in Abingdon:
<br ...

10 Takeaways on Mapping from Where 2.0

1. Maps are the height of the data pyramid. Once they’re populated, everything else (i.e. local search) gets easier. 2. 3D Cityscapes are a big part of the future, and will drive new types of ecommerce. This is the expensive battlefield that Microsoft and Google are playing on. The end game isn’t to be the destination site, but the platform for thousands of developers. 3. It doesn’t happen overnight. The Cityscapes are likely to be siloed products, with relatively small market share to start. Smaller, pocket-sized versions of them will appear on other parts of the Web. Indeed, bigger isn’t generally better. On many sites, maps should get smaller before they get bigger. It is the other content that will drive repeat usage. 4...

Google’s “Street View” and Privacy in Public

About 6 months ago Microsoft launched their Windows Live Local Virtual Earth service, providing street level images of San Francisco and Seattle. You can drive or walk around the map and view the streets and storefronts…and the people. This detailed level of mapping carries significant concerns about one’s privacy in public, which I pointed out at the time. Google has now jumped into the foray, offering their own “Street View” enhancement for Google Maps. Pretty slick, but the same concerns persist. If you click on the image to the right, you’ll find the “street view”for a Planned Parenthood clinic in lower Manhattan. Do you think those people hanging out in front expected their image to be taken and mapped by...

Q and A: What can I do to improve ranking results on regional Google sites?

Dear Kalena... I am doing some very basic SEO work for a South African website that targets the local market only. The majority of local searches are done on google.co.za, not google.com. What can I do to better my results on google.co.za for popular keywords? Marco (a happy subscriber of the Search Light Newsletter) Kalena's Answer: Dear Marco Glad you like the newsletter.
