Google Checkout Party Canceled Due to eBay Pressure

Here’s a little episode from the money-makes-the-world-go-round department. Google on Monday announced an alternative Google Checkout party with free food & massages at the side of an eBay event – likely to lure away sellers (Checkout is a competitor to eBay-owned PayPal): <<Are you an online seller attending eBay Live! in Boston this week? If so, join us for a celebration of user choice at the Google Checkout Freedom Party on Thursday night>> This didn’t bode so well with eBay, who, according to Valleywag, reacted by withdrawing AdWords ads on Google. And now, in a new blog post Google says that after “speaking with officials at eBay, we ... agreed that it was better for us not to feature this ev...

Is Text Messaging A Viable Media And Advertising Platform For Older Demographics?

USA Today announced a partnership with 4INFO, a text message information service, to provide targeted ads via text messages that USA Today readers can request on their cell phones for updated information on sports, stocks, weather and other such data. USA Today concedes that their average 44 year old user isn’t currently a big user of text messaging, but they are betting that they can change that behavior. Text messaging is certainly a viable media platform for the younger demographic that texts constantly, but can it work for older users, i.e. anyone over 25? “Typically our readers don’t text message,” said Matt Jones, director of mobile strategy and operations for Gannett Digital, a unit of USA Today parent, Ganne...

The Long Tail of E-Commerce

In the last a few years, the Internet has turned commerce on its head. Suddenly, once sound retail practices, like the mass-merchandising of a handful of popular products (think Cabbage Patch Kids, Tickle Me Elmos, Nintendos or Air Jordans), no longer guarantee a big financial payoff in today's retail environment. The marketplace has become so segmented by niche consumers that best sellers only produce a fraction of the revenue they did previously, while niche or specialty goods can translate into big business for retailers who learn to tap that end of the market, commonly referred to as "the Long Tail."<br /><br />In catering to the Long Tail consumer, e-tailers have several advantages over traditional retailers, such as infini...

Selling Stamps Online

I’ve got a large stamp collection that I’m considering selling.  The obvious – but relatively labor intensive – way to do this is on eBay.  I poked around looking for some other options, but didn’t come up with anything particularly credible.  Any stamp collectors out there willing to give me a clue?

E-commerce 2.0, or How the New New Mom & Pop Shop will beat the crap out of Wal-Mart

Jeremy Liew at Lightspeed Venture Partners just wrote an interesting post on E-Commerce 2.0 that describes how the various pieces of retailer logistics & supply chain are being web-enabled.  According to his Jeremy, now is a great time to be starting an internet retailer business -- startup costs are low, tech skills rqmts aren't high, and there are lots of great tools that enable a small team (or even individual) to run an online operation.  the playing field has been leveled, and almost anyone can jump in. Having occasionally dabbled in E-Commerce at PayPal and also in the late 90's with my own small consulting firm, i'd have to agree we've come a long way since the birth of internet commerce perhaps 10-12 years back.&nbs...

An effective pairing of AdSense and e-commerce

<a href="http://www.imineo.com">Imineo.com</a> is a French video-on-demand site offering a wide variety of videos in different formats. In 2005, the site's owners decided to use Google AdWords to drive qualified traffic to their site. After setting up their first campaigns, they implemented conversion tracking to evaluate their overall return on investment. More recently, the company added AdSense to their site. As co-owner Jean-Baptiste Sers told us, "Our business model is not based on advertising revenue -- but in order to increase our AdWords spend, we wanted to use AdSense."<br /><br />For an e-commerce advertiser, this might seem risky. Some might think that integrating AdSense could have resulted in a sales dro...

My New Favorite Online Shopping Experience

It had to happen sooner or later.... i still wanna be Etsy.com's BFF ... but my fickle e-commerce fancy has now been tickled mo-better by a little hottie called Barry's Farm. I may write an essay on why this is so super, but for now I'll just say they've thought of EVERYTHING. Every little thing is awesome. Magic even.
